Abstract

Cardiotoxicity is the occurance of heart electrophysiological dysfunction or muscle damage. In the present study Pandanus odoratissimus was used as Cardioprotective agent against Isoproterenol induced Myocardial Infarction in albino rats. The Hydroalcoholic extracts of Pandanus odoratissimusleaves were prepared, animals were divided into 5 groups of 6 animals each. Group-I serves as a control and receives normal saline. Group-II serves as disease Control and receives Isoproterenol 85mg/kg s.c for two consecutive days (14th& 15th day). Group-III receives Atenolol 10mg/kg i.p, Isoproterenol-85mg/kg s.c, for 15 days. Group-IV and Group-V animals receives the Hydro-alcoholic extracts of Pandanus odoratissimus at doses an of 200mg/kg p.o and 400mg/kg p.o along with Isoproterenol (85mg/kg on s.c) for 15 days. Preliminary phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of various active constituents.Alterations in the biochemical parameters such as CK-MB, LDH, LPO and antioxidant levels such as CAT, GSH, SOD in tissue homogenate due to administration of Isoproterenol were studied. Finally the defense action against the cardiotoxicity produced by Isoproterenol by P.odoratissimus was supported by histopathological studies.
